There’s a relatively new guy on YouTube, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I started watching him for his S2000 content, then he got a C6 Z51 Corvette, and then another S2000. Lately he’s taken to closing out his videos with:

Make sure that you enjoy your car.

After a few times hearing that, it really made an impression on me. It’s so easy to fall into the pattern of viewing a car mostly as an ongoing project. Often times it is that, but if we only see it that way, we rob ourselves of a relationship with the car as a partner for driving.

I had been spending a lot of my car energy on debating with myself different small mods to do or not do, how to maximize my improvement budget of time and money, and also ironing out little niggling problems like the broken trunk release on my S2000. And I realized, I’ve lost touch a bit with the magic of the car.

So I’ve taken her out for a few extra backroads drives this week.

Make sure that you enjoy your car!

There is a quote from Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence that has always stuck with me along the same lines

“The test of the machine is the satisfaction it gives you. There isn’t any other test. If the machine produces tranquility it’s right. If it disturbs you it’s wrong until either the machine or your mind is changed.”

I wonder if ‘driving your car’ is a comprehensive recommendation.
I know people who:
o collect cars
o clean, wash, wax, and hyper-detail their cars
o build projects, including cars
o maintain cars
o upgrade from one car to the next (serial collecting)
o brag about their cars
o race their cars
o bling their cars
o rice their cars
o restore cars
I may not want to do all of those things, because I also want to take my car out and drive it. But I can also see how those other choices are also valid choices. . .
